Earn Your Degree at Your Pace

Beginning in fall 2020, students now have the option to earn their master’s degree at a pace that fits their personal and professional aspirations.

Earn your degree at your own page

For more than 15 years, the Masters of Liberal Studies program at Rice has offered Houston-area, curious-minded individuals an avenue to pursue higher education in a curated learning environment. Small classes, renowned instructors, a tight-knit community. Among the many aspects that have traditionally attracted students to the MLS program, most notably is the degree plan flexibility offered by part-time studies. This year, we’re proud to announce that we’re expanding on that flexibility even further.

Beginning in fall 2020, students now have the option to earn their master’s degree at a pace that fits their personal and professional aspirations. Whether your goal is to complete your degree in a specified timeframe or customize your plan of study around course offerings, with options of full-time studies and part-time studies, students may complete the MLS program in as little as 4 semesters or as many as 14.

Advantages of Full-Time Study

  1. Immediate return for career goals and advancement
Many choose to embark on graduate studies to prepare for increased employment opportunities or higher pay scales. By completing your degree in 2 years, you’re that much closer to reaping the professional and economic benefits of your graduate degree.

  2. Easier long-term planning
Don’t let your studies keep you from making future life decisions. Been considering a big move? A career shift to an industry you’ve longed to enter? With full-time studies, you’re able to plan for your next steps with confidence.

  3. Eligibility for federal financial aid
To be eligible for federal financial aid, graduate students must be enrolled in a program at full-time status (a minimum of 9 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters). To learn more about your options, please visit Rice’s Office of Financial Aid’s site for graduate students: https://financialaid.rice.edu/graduates.

  4. Immerse yourself in your time here at Rice
We want you to get the most of your time as a Rice Owl. With full-time study you’re devoting more time to your studies meaning you’ll be on campus more often. Enjoy a daily coffee at Brochstein Pavilion, a stroll through the oak-lined paths or an in-depth exploration in Fondren Library. Branch beyond your classmates and meet some of the other people that make the Rice community so beloved. Your time as an Owl is special, make it the best you can.
