SUMMER SCHOOL ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION
Who Can Apply: The Rice University Summer School is open to:
- Current Rice Undergraduate and Graduate Students
- Visiting Students (undergraduate and graduate students from other universities and recently graduated high school students accepted by but not matriculated into a university)
- Class III Students (graduates of an accredited university not currently enrolled in a graduate program)
- Rising High School Juniors and Seniors (classes of ’10 and ’11 only)
Instructions for Current Rice Undergraduate or Graduate Students:
Any Rice undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing will automatically be accepted into the Rice Summer School program. (May Rice graduates who have not enrolled in a graduate program are considered Class III applicants. Please see section on Class III students for more information.) A Rice student who is not in good academic standing must receive written permission from his/her academic advisor. Rice students may take a maximum of 12 hours during the summer.
Students who are placed on academic probation after Summer School begins will be allowed to take only nine hours in Summer School. Students who are placed on academic suspension after Summer School begins will be asked to withdraw. No credit will be given to students who are placed on academic suspension after Summer School begins.
Although current degree-seeking Rice students do not need to apply for admission to Summer School, they must meet the deadlines listed on the Summer School calendar. Registrations after the deadline are subject to a late fee. Students will be billed as soon as they register. Bills will be sent to the permanent address of record.
Summer 2009 registration information will be available in spring 2009.
Rice undergraduates do not need an RDA PIN to register for summer courses. Students will only be able to register for the number of credit hours for which they have paid.
Rice students will not have liberal add/drop abilities for summer term. Please enter CRNs carefully.
Rice students who register for one course will not be able to Web drop it. Rice students who register for more than one course will not be able to Web drop the last course they registered for. If the wrong CRN is entered, students must make a trip to the Office of the Registrar to correct the registration. For courses starting after the first day of classes, the drop deadline is one week from the first day the class meets.
Read the entire refund policy and note that any refunds are calculated from the date the Summer School Office receives written notice of your decision to withdraw.
If you receive an error which reads MAXIMUM HOURS EXCEEDED, this means either the Office of the Registrar has not yet updated your summer record or you are attempting to register for more hours than have been paid for. Please adjust to the situation accordingly.
If any problems with registration are encountered please contact the Office of the Registrar at registrar@rice.edu.
If you have any questions, please call the Summer School Office at 713-348-4803.
Visiting students should obtain assurance from their universities that credit for the courses taken in the Rice Summer School is eligible for transfer.
Visiting students must apply for admission, beginning with the Summer School application form. A Dean of Students Recommendation form must also be completed and sent under separate cover.
All applicants must be in very good academic standing. Graduating high school seniors will receive consideration as long as they are in very good academic standing.
All applicants must also submit official transcripts of all course work completed through the current spring semester. (Official transcripts without spring semester grades will be accepted in order to begin your application process. Once an application is approved, students are expected to finish the spring semester courses with the same superior performance that led to their admission into the Rice Summer School.) Photocopies or faxed copies of official transcripts are not acceptable. Transcripts received after the deadline will not be accepted for consideration.
Students requesting more than eight credit hours of course work in one session must also submit a written request for approval of extra hours to the Dean of the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies.
Courses may not be taken on a pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. The summer program is not a degree-granting program and therefore not authorized to issue any forms students need to apply for visitor status, visas or visa waivers.
Application Fee: Visiting students must pay an application fee of $75 (checks payable to Rice University), which is nonrefundable unless the class is canceled by the Summer School Office. An additional nonrefundable $150 late fee must be paid if the application is submitted after the deadline. Applicants are urged to observe application deadlines. Courses without sufficient enrollments will be canceled immediately following the deadlines.
Course Deposit: $200 per course, which must accompany the application fee. Make checks payable to Rice University.
