The Texas Capitol in Austin.The most recent generation of historians has added a new level of sophistication to our understanding of Texas history. Using these scholarly insights, historian Patrick Kelly will examine the exploration and colonization of Texas as well as the myths, realities and historical impact of the Texas Revolution. He will also discuss the Indians of Texas, Texas during the Civil War and the transformation of the state’s economy and society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Participants will review the effects of global events on Texas and its effect on global events. They will also examine encounters between the state’s rich variety of cultural, racial and ethnic groups and its unique contributions to movies, television and music.

  • The Tejano experience
  • The Texas Revolution
  • Texas Indians: The Comanche
  • Texas in movies and television
  • Texas in song
  • 20th-century Texas politics

Instructor: Patrick Kelly, PhD, is associate professor of U.S. history at The University of Texas at San Antonio and has published books and articles on the national and international impact of the Civil War. He is currently working on a project examining the cotton trade between the Confederate States of America and Mexico in the 1860s. Dr. Kelly holds a PhD in history from New York University.
